Phuket Dive Guide : Hin Daeng
About the location and site
Hin Daeng, Thai for Red Rock, is a submerged boulder pinnacle with the rocks just breaking the surface. It is a huge dive site and looking at the bare rocks above water, you would have no idea that it is such a beautiful dive site below water. The east side has the best healthy soft corals in various shades of red and two ridges that slope gently into deeper water. Huge schools of trevallies form impressive silver walls and jacks hang out to hunt here for prey here. Depth at the southwest side drops down to 70+ metres, creating a steep wall of soft corals. At the southeast, schools of large round batfish roam the place close to the mooring line. There are often large schools of barracuda patrolling the outer reef. Pelagic fish such as jacks hang out to hunt close to the rock. In shallower areas, moray eels are commonly found hiding in crevices in the rocks. Hin Daeng is also good for spotting nudibranchs, cowrie shells, and various species of shrimps.

However, diving at Hin Daeng is not always about paying attention to the foreground since there are frequent sightings of graceful mantas swooping by and overhead. Whale sharks and leopard sharks are also seen in this area. Their presence will be obvious by tank banging and excited alerts from your co-divers.
