Phi Phi islands dive sites
The Phi Phi group is made up of 6 islands, Ko Phi Phi Don, Koh Phi Phi Ley, Koh Bida Nok and Koh Bida Nai to the south and Koh Yung (Mosquito Island) and Koh Mai Pai (Bamboo Island) to the north. They make up the Had Nopparattara - Koh Phi Phi National Park. These protected islands sit right in the middle of Phang Nga Bay just 40 km south of Krabi and 50 km southeast of Phuket. In former times, the local people called this island "Pulau Piapi". This derives from the language of the sea gypsies, with the first word meaning an island and "Piapi" being the name of a plant growing in the mangrove forests. During the centuries the name changed to Phi Phi.
Over the past several years, Koh Phi Phi has grown from a peaceful little Muslim fishing-village to one of the busiest international tourist destinations in the country. It now boasts of at least 10 diving centers, several expensive international hotels, and a variety of cheaper bungalows and guesthouses. Literally thousands of people visit it daily.
What sets Ko Phi Phi apart from other dive destinations in Thailand are two features: The first is the amazing limestone cliffs rising dramatically out of the sea and plunging equally dramatically straight down underwater with caves, overhangs, and swim-throughs in this soft rock. These rocks soar over 500 meters in some areas and beautiful green trees and bushes grow on the tops and sides of these cliffs. The second is the remarkable variety of dive sites that are concentrated in such a small area.
